Reading Programs:

Programs:

  • Reading Around the World:

  • Student Read-O Boards:

Read-O is a genre based program, but it is also leveled (without student knowledge) for ease of finding suitable materials for students. The files are kept on a shared drive so that teachers have access to them. The student picks a genre and either the teacher or librarian prints out the game board that is best suited to the student's level and needs. The students do not know that there are levels assigned to the books they will be reading to complete the game board.
The parent or teacher initials each square after the student completes the reading. When the board is completed, the student receives a free book of their choice.
  • Burke Elementary Reading Program:

  • Kuentz Elementary Reading Program:

    Kuentz Elementary Reading Program
Each year there is a special kickoff for the Coyote Call school-wide reading program. Students receive specially designed dog tags as they progress through the program. They attend a mid-way celebration and are honored at an end of year program if they earn all 10 dog tags.
  • Knightly Reading Program:

The Knightly Reading program at Mireles ES provides reading incentives, as well as free choice reading. The program focuses on different genres and encourages at home reading. The incentives are provided at the end of each 9 weeks. There is Flashlight Reading, Duct Tape Bookmark Making, Camp Reading in the Library, and literacy performances by authors and presenters.

The librarian states that the students seem to "get it" when discussing genres and that their academic vocabulary seemed to flow as they discussed books they'd read.
